After-school reading circles expand across Grand Turk and North Caicos

Volunteer-led sessions give primary pupils a quiet hour with books, a reading partner and a snack after the school day ends.

Community reading circles that began in a single church hall now meet in several settlements on Grand Turk and North Caicos, giving primary pupils an extra hour of reading after school.

How a session works

Each circle pairs two or three children with a trained volunteer. Pupils read aloud, talk through new words and take a book home for the week.

  • Sessions run on weekday afternoons during term.
  • Books are donated, labelled and rotated between circles.
  • Parents can sit in on the first visit.

Why it matters

Teachers say short, regular reading practice outside the classroom builds confidence quickly, particularly for pupils who have few books at home.

Families interested in joining a circle can ask at their local primary school or community centre.
