Saturday volunteers bring a Family Island community garden back to life
Neighbours on Eleuthera are clearing beds, repairing water tanks and sharing harvests from a plot that had sat unused for years.

A community garden on Eleuthera that had been overgrown for years is producing again, thanks to a rota of Saturday volunteers who clear, plant and water in the cool of the morning.
Starting small
The first weekends were spent cutting back brush and repairing two rainwater tanks. Raised beds followed, built from timber offcuts donated by local builders.
What is growing
- Peppers, tomatoes and callaloo in the raised beds.
- Pigeon peas along the fence line.
- Herbs in containers near the gate for easy picking.
Sharing the harvest
Produce is shared among the volunteers and with older residents who cannot easily get to a market. Anyone in the settlement is welcome to join on a Saturday morning.
